If you thought that the Tie-Dye trend was just a summer romance in 2019, you were wrong! Its comeback is happening right now and, you have certainly noticed it on Tik Tok and Instagram as the “New Hot Trend”. And models seem to love it the most: from Shanina Shaik to Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Sofia Ricci, they not only wear it but also create it! All in all, during the quarantine we all had a creativity boost and discovered new hobbies.
Unlike several trends, tie-dye is not just for the super-rich. It’s not even solely reserved for the ‘super-fashionable’. This is a look that can be, and is, worn by quite literally everyone. And the even better news? You can do it yourself at home. It is a fun activity that will not only make boredom fade away but also leave you with a killer outfit afterward.
If you are keen to try it, here is a Step-by-Step on how to do it:
What You Need
- A clean cotton fabric, preferably white
- Natural Ingredients such as Onion Peel, Turmeric (Yellow), Beetroot, Red Cabbage (Red), Spinach (Green)- the combinations will be written below
- Rubber bands
- Stones/ Tennis balls (Optional)
What You Do
Step 1: Fabric Prep
Take 4 cups of water and mix in 1 cup of Salt in a sauce pan.
Bring the water to a boil, and put your fabric into the pan. If the water does not cover the shirt, add 1 cup of water and ¼ cup of salt until the saltwater covers the shirt completely.
Allow it to boil for 5-10 minutes then lower heat to a simmer for one hour. This step helps your shirt retain color when washing in the future. Remove from heat, and rinse shirt with cold water. Squeeze extra water from the fabric.
Step 2: Creating your dye
Purple: To create this color, add 1 cup of water and ½ of blueberries to a small saucepan. If you’d like more dye, you can always double this ratio. Add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to the mixture to help the dye set.
Gold: You can use a mixture of yellow onion skins and turmeric, or one of the ingredients to create a yellow color. Using just turmeric will create a very gold color. We used 6 teaspoons of turmeric in ½ cup of water, mixed it really well with a fork, and that was it!
Baby Pink: ½ cup of beets, 2 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of vinegar and your mixture is complete!
Red: 2 cups of water along with ½ of frozen cherries and two tablespoons of white vinegar.
Blue: ½ a cup of red cabbage with 4 cups of water and two tablespoons of white vinegar.
Green: ½ a cup of spinach with 4 cups of water and two tablespoons of white vinegar.
Step 3: Rubber band it!
This is where you show your creativity! You can twist it and add as many rubber bands as you want, you can play with stones, balls and rubber band them around your fabric…just make it fun!
Step 4: Dip it!
Just soak your t-shirt! If you did the twisted wheel, you can just soak each corner one at a time. You’ll put the part of the shirt you’d like colored in your selected dye, over the stove. Bring your dye mixture to a boil, then let simmer 30 minutes with the desired area of fabric for coloring in the pan.
(To achieve deeper colors, simply leave your fabric in the dye for longer, you can even soak them over night, just turn the heat off after 30 minutes, and let cool until the day.)
Step 5: The final result
When you’ve finished coloring the shirt, rinse with cold water. You might add a little bit of salt for fixing the color better. Leave it out in the sun to dry and VOILA! The hottest trend of the season straight in your closet with no penny out of your pocket. How cool is that?!
